The term is not a synonym for transgender or transsexual and should only be used if someone self-identifies as gender non-conforming.

A synonym for cisgender, gender straight people are those whose gender identity matches up with expectations of their sex assigned at birth. Gender questioning [jen-der - kwes-chuh-ning] adjective. Gender variant [jen-der-vair-ee-uh nt] adjective gender variant people. Like gender nonconforming, gender variant is an umbrella term used for anyone who is not cisgender. Gender-fluid [jen-der-floo-id] adjective gender fluid people. Someone for whom gender identity and presentation is a spectrum. Instead, they may fluctuate between presenting as feminine, masculine, neither, or both.

Heterosexual [het-er-uh-sek-shoo-uh l] adjective heterosexual people. Also straight. High femme [hahy fem] adjective high femmes, high femme people. Often used to describe a lesbian, bisexual, or queer woman who presents and identifies firmly as feminine. While many people believe that high femme women are only interested in butch women, that is not true.

Homosexual [hoh-muh-sek-shoo-uh l] adjective homosexual people. An outdated clinical term referring to queer people that is considered derogatory and offensive. Intergender [in-ter-jender] adjective intergender people. Someone who experiences their gender as in between other genders, such as someone whose gender falls somewhere between being a man or a woman. Intersex [in-ter-seks] noun intersex people. Avoid the outdated and derogatory term "hermaphrodite. Acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer.

Latinx [la-teen-ex] adjective. A gender-neutral term used to replace the gender-specific Latino or Latina. It can be used to refer to a group of people or to a single person of Latin-American descent. Some lesbians may prefer to identify as gay adj. Avoid identifying lesbians as "homosexuals," a derogatory term. However, the term can get more complex when looking at identity politics and how lesbians fit under the patriarchy — many women will embrace the term and identity even more because it also implies a complete rejection of patriarchal standards i.

Simone De Beauvoir's theories on women only being seen as complete in relation to men. Calling oneself a lesbian does not only mean that one only dates women, but it also implies that one can exist on their own without the sexual, economic, and emotional support from men.

Lipstick lesbian [lip-stik - lez-bee-uh n] adjective lipstick lesbians. It is sometimes considered a derogatory term. Male to female [meyl-tuh-fee-meyl] noun male to female people, MTF people. A term used to talk about transgender women, who were assigned male at birth and have since transitioned to female.

Also seen as MTF. Masculine-of-center [mas-kyuh-lin - uhv - sen-ter] adjective masculine-of-center people. Used to describe people who feel, and often present, as masculine but may not identify as a man. Masculine-of-center people may also identify as butch, stud, aggressive, boi, transmasculine, etc. Masculine-presenting [mas-kyuh-lin - pri-zent-ing] adjective masculine-presenting people. Describes someone who expresses gender in a masculine way.

Someone who is masculine-presenting might or might not also be masculine-of-center and vice versa. Metrosexual [me-troh-sek-shoo-uh l] adjective metrosexuals.

Usually used to describe a straight man — although some queer men may also use the term — who spends more time on his appearance than is considered normal for men. Misgender [mis-jen-der] verb. Used instead of Mr. Example: Mx. Neutrois [noo-trwah] noun. An umbrella term used for people who do not identify as either a man or a woman. Agender, gender-fluid, non-binary, and genderless people may all also identify as neutrois.
