Jump to navigation. The study area is Medmerry coastline located in south east England. Coastal flooding has long been a problem at Medmerry and a medmerry risk to the nearby west of Selsey and Pagham. The previously existing defence, a 3km shingle bank, was subject to sussex breach.

An issue in the wider region of The Solent has been the loss of environmentally important coastal habitat, as a result of coastal squeeze. The impacts of development and flood defence infrastructure around the large, urbanised areas of Southampton and Portsmouth have caused local sea levels to rise sussex wetland and intertidal habitats to be lost to the sea. At first the strategy by UK Environment Agency EA to build new inland defences from the existing coastline was not received well from the local community.

In response medmerry EA worked with a large group of concerned sussex people to form the Medmerry Stakeholder. West Group MStAGa group of self-elected representatives from among the wider group to represent local views, interact with the project team and report back to the community. Inland was medmerry for the realignment. Construction began in October and was completed in late.

To assist in decision making on medmerry issues a Habitat Creation Working Group was created. A further partnership with the RSPB Royal Society for the Protection of Birds helped manage construction during breeding times, particularly for medmerry birds. Important Bronze Age settlements were also discovered in west site and were managed in sussex with the Centre for Applied Archaeology at the University College London.

Coastal squeeze remains an issue for other managed realignment schemes, which can be subject to the same erosion processes medmerry natural coastal west. The same methodology of creating water banks can be applied to areas that are in danger by floods. Managed realignment to address intertidal habitat loss or biodiversity still remains debated so it must be studied individually and extensively for every case.

Rough grass margins offer suitable habitat for small mammals which in turn attract owls and kestrels that prey on them. Cereal crops and the hedgerows that line them provide nesting opportunities for corn buntings, yellowhammers, partridge, skylarks and lapwing. Grassland - Grassland provides winter food at high tide for wildfowl such as wigeon, snipe and brent geese, and breeding sites for redshank and lapwing in spring.

Saline lagoons — The lagoons have been created with islands to attract breeding shorebirds and are used by avocets, oystercatchers, ringed and little ringed plovers. Freshwater ponds and ditches — As well as providing habitat for freshwater invertebrates and the wildlife that feed on them, many of our ponds and ditches also support a community of reedbed specialists from reed and sedge warblers to reed buntings and little grebes.
